Finally, it is important to recognize that even if your system is physically and technologically secure, you still need to establish a certain set of policies and procedures for all of your employees to ensure overall security. For example, each employee may need to be educated to never give out his or her password for any corporate system, even if asked by a security administrator. Most good password systems are designed so that security and system administrators have the capability to reset passwords, and should never need to ask a user for her existing password to reset it to a new one.

The AutoGenerateColumns method will automatically generate columns in the table based on the public properties of the Person object, as shown in figure 5.1.

Note Do not worry if you are not sure how many widgets the container will hold. You can add or remove cells in the General tab in the widget Properties window. You can then change the position of a widget within the box under the Packing tab. You are also still able to edit the user interface with your code after it is built by Libglade!

This is only useful in certain situations. You ll see in figure 5.1 that there are some columns, such as Roles, for which the Grid doesn t know how to render a value. The default behavior is to call ToString on each property value, but this isn t particularly useful for complex types because it just displays the type name. AutoGenerateColumns is most useful if you re using a dedicated presentation model rather than a nested object hierarchy.

Attackers can potentially exploit a gullible employee by impersonating another employee within the company and convincing him (say, over the phone) to tell him his username or password. Such an attack is called a social engineering attack, and is geared at taking advantage of unsuspecting employees. Even if your applications, operating systems, and networks are secure, and your servers are behind locked doors, an attacker can still conduct social engineering attacks to work around the security measures you have in place. As evidenced by the threat of social engineering, it is important to have policies and procedures in place to help guard sensitive corporate information. Writing down such policies and procedures on paper or posting them on the company intranet is not enough. Your employees need to be aware of them, and they need to be educated to be somewhat paranoid and vigilant to create a secure environment. A combination of physical security, technological security mechanisms, and employees who follow policies and procedures can result in improved overall security for your environment. It is often said that security is a process, not a product (Schneier 2000). There is much more to security than just technology, and it is important to weigh and consider risks from all relevant threat sources.

After adding the vertical box, you will see three separate, empty container meshes; notice the changes in the Properties window and the widget tree view. To these meshes, we will be adding a toolbar, an address bar, and a tree view.

Although the previous example of the MvcContrib Grid seemed to just work magically with a single line of view code, it has some pretty strong opinions about how it will render a model. For example, it assumes that all public properties should be rendered as columns (unless they re decorated with the ScaffoldColumn attribute). If you don t like this behavior, you do have more options and this is where the power of the Grid comes into play. Listing 5.2 shows how you can use the Grid to customize the output for individual columns.

It is usually a good idea when creating a toolbar to add it to a handle box so that the user can remove the toolbar from the window if desired. To do this, you need to select the Handle Box item from the widget palette, and click in the topmost GtkVBox cell. You can then add a toolbar widget to the handle box in the same way.
